TAM is a nationally recognized program offered by the LBDSD. The primary objective of this program is to help control alcohol related incidents by providing you and your employees with effective alcohol management techniques. This is a voluntary program. Participants may receive access to special property and liability insurance through TAM certification.

Seminar Objectives Are:

  • To establish an attitude of professionalism for employees.
  • To improve employee knowledge and understanding of their role as an alcohol server.
  • Provide tools to reduce alcohol related incidents.
  • Increase public awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and the industry's interest in responsible serving.
  • Provide employees with skills necessary for the prevention of illegal sales to underage persons.

Who should become certified as a trainer?
Any lounge, casino, restaurant, convenience store, package liquor or grocery store can provide in-house training.

Is TAM a nationally accredited certification program?
YES, the LBDSD On-Sale and Off-Sale TAM program is a national certification program which has been approved by the South Dakota Department of Revenue. All participants are required to attend three hours of training and pass a 20 question exam with 75% or higher. A certification card is issued by LBDSD to each qualifying participant. The certification card is valid for 4 years.

How do I become a Trainer?
Persons wanting to become an instructor must complete the following:

1) attend a regular TAM seminar and score 90% or higher on the participant TAM exam
2) attend a Train-the-Trainer seminar and pass the instructor exam
3) present a TAM course before a certified TAM instructor

Once certified, instructors can purchase TAM participant manuals and certification test exams at $12.50 per participant from the LBDSD office. The completed exams will be returned to the LBDSD office for scoring. A certification card will be issued to those with scores of 75% or higher.

What is the cost of the Train-the-Trainer program?
T he cost to become a certified instructor is $200 or $150 members. This includes the Train-the-Trainer instructor seminar, TAM instructor guide and videotape, SD law poster, SD driver's license information, US identification checking guide information and certified TAM instructor consultation.

Looking for a convenient way to certify your employees? The following instructors are available to assist you or your community in setting up a TAM seminar to meet your needs. A minimum number of employees will be required to hold a class.

TAM Re-certification
The LBDSD TAM certification for employees and instructors is valid for four years. To obtain recertification all employees must attend a 3 hour TAM EMPLOYEE seminar and pass the written exam by 75% or better. This certification will reduce the fines assessed by the state of South Dakota as per SDCL 35-2-10.1.

LBDSD is in the process of developing a TAM INSTRUCTOR recertification seminar. All instructors will need to attend the instructor class to be certified for an additional four years. More information regarding recertification classes and fees will be sent at a later date. To maintain active instructor status all instructor's must teach at least one TAM seminar per year. If your status has lapsed, please call the office to reactivate.

The Licensed Beverage Dealers of South Dakota is providing this education to help establishments prevent illegal alcohol and tobacco sales and to prevent the suspension of your liquor license (as per SD Codified Law 35-2-10.1). All employees that sell On-Sale or Off-Sale alcohol in any lounge, casino, restaurant, convenience store, grocery store or package liquor store are encouraged to attend.

Employee Seminar Topics:

1. Service and Selling Techniques:
TAM Formula - Assist customers in making responsible decisions about purchasing & consumption. Handling Problem Situations: underage, intoxicated, secondary-party sales, attempted after hours sales, theft of alcohol or tobacco.

2. Physical Effects of Alcohol:
How alcohol is absorbed, distributed & eliminated by the body. Recognize the signs of intoxication and prevent illegal sales.

3. South Dakota Laws and Issues:
What laws do you need to be aware of? Supplement Policy Manual is available to assist management with compliance issues.

4. Identification:
Legal ID's verses Illegal ID's. Examples of altered, borrowed, forged and purchased ID's. ID checking guidelines for US driver's licenses.

Registration Information:
Pre-registration is required & class size is limited. LBDSD reserves the right to cancel any class with less than 15 pre-registrations. Registration fee will be refunded only if cancellation is 48 hours prior to the seminar!
